This is the work of digital artist Dorothy Golz. She’s taken traditional paintings and placed the original heads on bodies in a modern setting. Some work better than others, but those that do so, work well.

I did not until now. Very clever piece, it highlights the second hand smoke issue amongst other things and does make the onlooker see smoking in a different light. Hoping the onlooker to be a smoker here too.

No. By the Gods no. Once upon a time there were, but that was so long ago that it is not just over the hills and far away, but practically in Mongolia now. And I think that heightens my dislike of the evil weed. On the subject of which, weed that is, they will sell cigarettes and make lots of profit from this freely available killer, yet it is illegal to toot cannabis in a pipe when it is both a painkiller, and mirth inducer. Everything is ruled by profit in these areas. The pharmaceutical companies are in cahoots with the tobacco industry and the governments, from their angle – every loser in the health stakes is a winner in their own. Are there puffs in the land of H?

Precisely my stance and situation. On a physical level, there is little more repugnant to me than the stench of cigarettes on another’s clothing, about their person or in their abode. On the moral level, I need not boil the cabbage twice in reiterating your own words. Few of us in our fifties and sixties do not know of some smoker who has fallen victim to lung cancer or COPD. A dear friend of mine’s partner was recently diagnosed with an untreatable cancer, and four years ago I lost a lifelong very dear friend to COPD. I smoked fags only as a student – Number 6 (cheap!) – but exclusively in the evening in The Union Bar when drinking seemed impossible without an accompanying puff. And I smoked cannabis for a number of years but gave it up when, as with alcohol, my tolerance seemed to reduce to levels that hardly made the practise worthwhile – I very occasionally have a glass of sherry or a single bottle of Innis & Gunn.The great boon of cannabis for me was in facilitating uncontrollable laughter at nothing more than the way it seems to time-shift awareness (memory to be strict) three seconds behind the event – a simple analysis. Thankfully though, I have always been able to laugh deeply at absurdity, and as a human, I can never escape that condition in any case.

And yes, I too know those who have lost their lives due to smoking, my grandfather for one, and have friends who have lost loved ones also. When young one just doesn’t get the implications, the exuberance of life is bounding around within, wagging its tail at things which are ultimately life threatening.
Cannabis had a very persistent effect upon sonmi – incessant laughter at anything at all, a bit of fluff on the carpet would do, then eating as much chocolate and cake as could be fitted into a body, followed by falling fast asleep. As this often all happened within the space of half an hour, it wasn’t really much use as a social drug to me. I recall there was a point where I had to keep off alcohol for six months, and in order to be able to stand the company of my hammered friends, I took a small pipe and some squidgy black with me to toot at every now and again. One toot later and I quickly realised that not one witty quip sprang to my lips, in fact, I was that previously mentioned village idiot in full bloom. The horror. I don’t mind everyone else being an idiot, its just not for me falls about laughing. So that was the end of my tooting days. I did once or twice use it as a painkiller, and yes, it worked to some extent, but the previously mentioned side effects were too damning for me.
These days I laugh so much anyway I need no prompting from drugs, and that is indeed due to the absurdity of life as you say. I’ll be laughing all the way to the funny farm at this rate.
