I have been pondering upon the Cloud as to that which visitors see first when they amble across the aether and stumble upon a new blog – mine, or yours say. The most recent post displayed that day or night will be the swinger as to whether they then decide to look at the ‘about’ section, which of course in turn will determine if they shall stay for a while and delve within, or move on, finding this place is not for them. One blogger I follow has written “But stem your haste, be not so quick to click your way away till you’ve at least had a taste.” I like that, and I’d steal it brazenly (adding some kind of merciless threatening tone of course), were I a dirty thief. As things stand I am a very clean thief I’ll have you know so don’t go round spreading such heinous rumours or I’ll set Jack Frost on you. wags her finger nodding furiously
I am aware that many templates allow for the main page to be a static one – where a blogger can display just one post all the time, any others to be found by then exploring the blog farther. I myself do not employ this option because I have found it stems the ‘flow’ of a blog. If I visit one which does use this option I feel the same, it does not draw me in. This is often the case with blogs which have a front page full of circles with titles of posts, or photographs upon it I’ve noted, though it can breed a little curiosity in me as they are a bit of a lottery, and I am liable to pick a random picture/circle/word and see where it leads. My template also does not allow an option of a ‘feed’ where one can scroll down the first page to view a few previous few posts in full – I note a few of you folks have just that going on, and others have a snippet of the previous posts listed below the latest offering.
And on the theme of curiosity, I’m wondering which post of yours, my reader, would you say encapsulates the essence of your blog beyond the ‘about’ section. If you could choose a piece to be the very first post a pilgrim traversing the blogosphere viewed when they came across your blog….which would it be? Which piece would you submit to some all-powerful being with tentacles who would judge you mercilessly upon the content, but reward you with a magic carpet and all the gold you could eat if it deemed said piece to be as marvellous as you clearly think it is yourself? laughs.
There is no strict theme, fiction, non-fiction, the moon on a stick waved about for twenty seconds…anything goes.
So, show me that which, in your opinion, (not that of others – in as much as not the most popular necessarily), is your pièce de résistance to date. We all have jewels in our treasure chests. Show me your jewels say I. laughs for some time at this. (Please note that there are no demands on the Cloud, if you do not wish to join in, you shall not be deemed a kill-joy. Unless that is you have recently killed someone named ‘Joy’. Then I’d have to say “Yes – you sir/madam are an absolute kill Joy”.)
Leave a link in the comment box to the post with a few words as to why you have chosen said piece if you fancy, if you don’t fancy then don’t. If you like French Fancies then you’re not alone I’d say, and if you are a fancy-pants sort then you’re in the wrong place for the Cloud has no truck with such fuss-pots.

I like to stop by Sonmi’s Cloud on account of it’s comfortable. Peaceful. Refreshing. As for ‘about me’, well, I like to think that it’s not about me. I’m an old desert rat and get to sit in the sun and commune with lizards and watch as the world consumes itself. I find most of that irritating. So much pointless if not needless death…

I found it hard to think of one article of my own as being better than another, perhaps because I write some in a rather dry and analytical way, and others a little less so, or more anecdotally. Also, my pieces are not intended as exemplars of quality writing, but merely to convey ideas, and it makes no sense to set one idea against another. I know which post of yours I liked best, and which incidentally won my vote for World Post of the Year 2014. It was short. But your long ones are great too!
Readers at my place have thus far found this one, which has a rather hackneyed title, most to their liking, and I think its quality perhaps a little above my (admittedly low) average: http://wp.me/P4wkZJ-1X I quite like my effort of last September known as “Tartuffe”, and also the prior month’s “The Condensation of thought” – the latter perhaps being the piece that in the writing of I found my short-form ‘style’, if that is the word, which it is not.
As to blog presentation, then I have not given too much thought to this. I do have a static ‘Home Page’, although I am uncertain as to its worth, or even its purpose. Almost all visitors land at my site on a preselected ‘page’ or ‘post’, one which has been identified mainly through one of either a) Email notification (subscribers), b) Tags, or c) The WP Reader. I am not even sure how any reader might land on the ‘Home Page’ upon first arrival.

I’m sure it is Hariod. ScanSafe flags a LOT of perfectly good web sites and we do sometimes have to click through to the site if it’s work-related. I’m not sure what it is that triggers it but your blog isn’t the only one that does.

My tiny corner of Blogoland is sort of like that though – not as oblique as our hostess the cloud-dweller manages here, but certainly not normal. Wow, I’m going to have to think about this, Sonmi. Yes, your question deserves significant contemplation and soul-searching (for those who believe we have souls). I will get back to you on your question regarding which, of my more than 800 posts, is my pièce de résistance.
In the meantime, I pretty much agree with all of the other “criteria” you mentioned. If someone’s blog does not have an About page, I will not read anything further. I, too, do not like blogs with a static page you see every time you go there or those where the first thing you see is a “table-of-contents” like page. My blog does show “related posts” at the bottom of each post, which related posts seem to be randomly selected by WordPress, sometimes having no evidence relationship whatsoever to the post in question.
So I will pick up the gauntlet you’ve thrown and will search for the one post that “encapsulates the essence” of my blog. And as Rick said to Ilsa, “Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.”

Hi Somni- great prompt! Certainly got me thinking on a cold Tuesday… It’s hard to choose- since the ‘purpose’ of my blog (assuming there was a real purpose to be had) jumps all over the place- from discussions about myth, religion, (pop) cultural mores, social commentary and politics to book reviews and links to songs I’m liking in the moment.
Wherever possible I try to link these things together- but that works better at some times than at others.
I wrote this one, recently- as a way of reflecting upon my impulses and analyses:
It brings together some of my favourite things- so it’s pretty representative of my ‘style’- such as it is.

Did you just paste the URL from the main Google display page? If so, then try now clicking ‘view image’ and use that URL instead. It has a file name ending with ‘.jpg’ which is necessary. No promises. H x

In a sea of poetry, astronomy photos, and trying to make the world a better place, I sometimes talk about myself. I don’t know if I would call it a pièce de résistance, but a post I wrote around my blog’s first anniversary is a good way to get to know me:

I like obscure references and despite its length, this post has a double dose of it. It makes a reference to a reference missed.

Without over-analyzing the assignment my thoughts went equally to two separate posts. I believe my ‘Right-Brain’ would suggest: “A Brush With Greatness” – Pt2 http://blogdogit.com/article.php?story=20130216172734651 , while my ‘Left-Brain’ was pushing for: “Back to qBasics” http://blogdogit.com/article.php?story=20121031190716104
I go to those mainly because – in lieu of an “About” page – these tend to lift the veil of mystery maintained by the webmaster at BlogDogIt.com. While not particularly my best writing, these are the post I would consider must-reads if you are trying to get to know the person behind the blog. If I had to choose only one (as the rules would seem to indicate) I’d have to say check out “A Brush With Greatness” – Pt2 http://blogdogit.com/article.php?story=20130216172734651 I think it’s kinda cool… (take THAT left-brain me) 😉

So this was really tough, since I blog about so many things, from religion to politics,to social issues. From youthful memories to current experiences to flash fiction. But if I really need to point to something that expresses the essence of who I am right now, it’s that I’m a blogger. I spend a lot of time writing posts and reading posts that other bloggers have written. And so, as I went through my posts, I picked this one as a way to express who I am as a blogger and the rewards I get from blogging.
Thanks for this challenge, Sonmi. And damn how I wish I’d have thought of it first!

Hello there, this has all snowballed beyond any expectations, said expectations being my handful of loyal followers, of which I thought around four or five at most would join in. I like your choice of post as it seems to link back to the consequences of writing a popular post, in as much as…lots of people suddenly appear to read, and in some cases follow your blog! This is disconcerting, but then to be honest I was disconcerted when I had three followers and I seem to have got over that laughs. Thank you for adding to the party.

Simply because most of my readers (I don’t think) are interested in that journey. I cant really say what I like, its so much more than that. I get a feeling, more than even reading. When I enter into someone else’s world. Domain. A feel good/awkward instantly. Some have images, others are just writing. Some I feel to support.
Some I don’t even read, but I like them.
But I’m strange, I keep a yoga book up above my bed at night when I sleep, and truly believe that I have scheduled free practice whilst sleeping, because to be honest I’ve got way to much time on my hands to even fit it into my schedule during the day. I did also just watch the matrix for the first time
My blog has to be image first words second, for my peace of mind. Writing was not something I did before, everything was image based. I didn’t even like writing till about 6 months ago

I always like to think that my most recent post is my ‘best ever’… So for that reason, I agree with your preferred style of sequential-in-reverse as the better option. Of course, different blogs require, and will do, different things to provide that impact upon landing.
On looking through stats however (which I NEVER do, because that would be vain and self-absorbed…), it’s interesting that my ‘top posts’ seem to be the ones I’m less invested in, or are my own least favourite. But they seem to be the ones that have generated the most interest.
I don’t know what that says about me or my writing…

I’m always a bit late to these things! Truth be told, I dashed over here like a crazy man, because my commenters list (which, obviously!, has you in it), on my stats page that I never read, did not show the magical ‘Following’ text adjacent to it. Shock! I thought WP had severed my following of your blog somehow.
Damned gremlins!, I thought. Turns out ’tis just a glitch…

“like a crazy man” – like one…or an actual one? Hahahaha. blows a raspberry. The curse of ‘the unfollow button malarkey’ is widespread, and very irritating actually. I’m glad to have you still here though for sure.

I like this post, I found this from Doobsters abode and then thought “oh dear, I cannot think of a post that sums up my blog” this is probably because I am of the opinion that I may have ruined my blog, I had one which was going all ok, and then I got a bee in my bonnet about what I call “ghost followers” those random follows that you get, they appear from no where and you will never see or hear from these people again. And so that bee in my bonnet led me to create another blog, cleaner, free of ghosts.
But then of course how do you attract new people, you always have that risk of another ghost. So whilst the older blog dwells in frustrated obscurity the newer blog is just in frustrated obscurity.
However despite all those words I will attempt to find a post which is defined as you ask.
From the new blog I think this post – https://habitatforheavyhearts.wordpress.com/2015/02/09/the-bottle/ – I (at least I hope I) am looking at things in a different way, using my imagination to piece together a story, thought or memory from any photo that I find. My imagination can run riot and I can write freely without anyone I know in real life finding it and judging me.
From the old blog, which has more posts (some of which are repeated on the new blog) it is more difficult – I think I will go with https://cognitivereflection.wordpress.com/2014/06/03/inspiration-monday-penguin-flight-school/ I wanted to be something I was not, I wanted to write well and have fun, be positive like Skipper says at the end, instead of feeling like Rico at the beginning.

Dang! A lot of folks have responded to your call! I did, but while looking through what is an enormous amount of material I forgot what I was doing there became disheartened laid down for a rest and fell into a deep sleep from which I could only be woken by the washing house woman who I’d assumed for some time was dead.

And as for your choices, two I note, and two I expected laughs some more, I could not have chosen better myself, though to be fair I was not asked, and that wasn’t the point in the first place, but, were I in your shoes (looks at the waders he’s wearing somewhat suspiciously), these two would have been in the top ten for sure.

I’m glad you’ve come clean because I am sure you are not alone in this fury. I imagine people who have blogs with several billion posts tucked within (such as your good (debatable) self, thinking “Gee thanks…you bastard!” Then trawling through the back-log anyway. And for the effort involved P&F I thank you, though it really is very impolite to call me a bastard, even just in your heard, so no apple pie and cream for your desert tonight and possibly a stern finger wagged in your general direction. Time, as ever, will tell.

Hi Sonmi, I’m here via Doobster’s blog too. Love the idea. I quickly went back through some of my posts. Whether or not I get a lot of comments or likes I simply love the creative writing aspect of blogging. Still not sure what mine’s about, hopefull that will come with time. I don’t have a ton of readers, this post is from last year so not many comments. But, I enjoyed writing it. Thanks! Look forward to reading your blog.

Oh to have been at those geysers! Marvellous. Blogs are organic, they grow exactly how they wish to I reckon , they grow arms legs and eventually…wings.
I too have few followers (though I seem to have collected a daunting amount thanks to this post! laughs. Inspiration is the key for me – finding it, and doling it out I hope. Thanks for coming over!
