I was born with the wrong sign In the wrong house With the wrong ascendancy I took the wrong road, That led to The wrong tendencies I was in the wrong place At the wrong time For the wrong reason And the wrong rhyme, Wrong in a nutshell.
…with the stats page I find. It informs me in the bar chart that I have had 110 views today already, and yet I have actually only 18 views according to the part which tells one the posts viewed. The Cloud is disturbed by this activity. I don’t give much of a fig to be honest, but it is mildly curious and I thought I would mention it just in case others are experiencing similar anomalies.
It’s a WordPress mystery. Sort of like when your work page changes and is formatted in some new manner by WordPress as if they figure they’re doing you a favor.

They like to slip in a little chaos occasionally I suspect.

Statistics will drive you nutz if you try to make any kind of sense out of them. My BlogDogIt.com blog is of the “Geeklog” variety rather than WordPress. It has a feature called GUS (Geeklog User Statistics) that is very comprehensive and detailed. Using those features I am able to determine that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of automated hacking attempts made on a daily basis. On average I would say a full 30% of logged visits are by evil robots and account for around 75% of daily hits. Part of my daily blogging routine involves purging the logs of these worthless nogoodniks and blocking their individual IP addresses. Only then do I feel confident about the statistics reporting.
Many of the attacks are nothing more than a casual check to see if I am running a vulnerable plugin or attempts to create a new account and getting tripped up by the “capcha” system. Unfortunately the higher your search engine ranking, the bigger target you become to the dark side.
I would take this as a sign that perhaps the days of your “security through obscurity” may well be behind you. Such is the price of fame.
Comments are your best statistic… +1

You may well be right there masodo. I noticed it primarily because I’m so used to low numbers I was a little taken aback. It is a glitch of sorts because although I know Russia sends a quota of dumb-bots my way, I can see that they are just that from the maps. There have been some issues with…hmm… (about to stray into territory she knows sod all about and talk utter tosh)* …SSLR? SSR? something, a code on WordPress that has been activated recently and stops…..some ‘things’ happening (puts on some glasses and looks serious and nods a lot).

I am one who pays way too much attention to my stats…and have blogged a number of times about what seem to be anomalies with them. But today everything seems to be in order and all numbers cross-foot. I’m looking at the “old” stats page format, though. I haven’t checked the “new and improved” stats page because whenever I do, it makes me feel like I need to throw up in my mouth.

“I am one who pays way too much attention to my stats” – NO! Really? Hahahaha. Sorry (looks sheepish (better than piggish) briefly) I too hate the new stats page sir, the layout is atrocious!

I speak from a position of complete ignorance, particularly so as regards these technical things. However, you may find that the spammers are onto you and are viewing images placed here by finding them in Google. Although these get swept away by Akismet after the event, I wonder if they also get included in the total views for the day. For example, I have a photograph on my site of a lady chewing Betel nut (it’s horrendous), and right at this moment it comes up as the 14th. image on Google images when you simply search ‘Betel nut’. That is an incredibly high ranking given the excruciatingly low profile of my site and the fact that the photo doesn’t even feature a Betel nut, only someone who has chewed one and who looks yucky as a consequence. So, I suspect I get loads of ‘views’ which are simply spammers accessing my page via Google images in a bid to try and slip me a funny one.

Another wildly speculative notion: I have just viewed all the images in your sidebar, and I wonder if that gets counted as a further 30+ views in the total, whilst remaining unlisted as specific page views?

It’s hard to say because my stats bar is on and off so far as being specific goes, but they do show that they have been viewed, in the list below the main chart. On the old stats…if you get me laughs.

*makes a note never to use a picture of anyone chewing a Betel nut ever. People don’t look at my images much at all, but then I do not post very many. In fact….I’m wondering if I have any at all…yes, I’m sure I have. Apart from the glaringly obvious ones on the main page I mean. Spammers do get stopped a lot by Akimet, Askimet? Askhimyet? That’s starting to sound like some kind of mountain range in Lord of the Rings so I’ll stop.

If you are getting a very high hit-count on an image, somebody may be “direct linking” to your image on their website. (In other words rather that have the picture in with their files they just address yours.) This is very poor citizenship (to say the least.)
Whenever I determine that any one is direct linking one of my images I modify it to include the words “Image hosted by BlogDogIt.com”
I had this happen on some pretty high profile websites and have actually generated some traffic thanks to the free advertising. If you are interested, I blogged about this in a post called “Expecting The Unexpected”
