A thousand and one tales she spun for a thousand and one nights, Less bumblebees more scarves, orchestras fanfares and fanfaronades, She Her Her, Sultan's Swing
Scheherazade, also commonly Sheherazade (Russian: Шехераза́да, tr. Shekherazáda; IPA: [ʂɨxʲɪrɐˈzadə]), Op. 35, is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888 and based on One Thousand and One Nights, sometimes known as The Arabian Nights.
And it is quite beautiful.
Lay back, have the cogs stop whirring for a short span, and take a ride on this why don’t you . . .
Beautiful. I spent many years singing classical music, the appreciation for it never leaves you. Thank you for sharing.

Ah, I’m glad to have lured you here with such a wondrous melody. You have excellent taste, much like esme. And a singer too eh? Lovely!

All we need now is Mr Whelk to come and join us, playing the spoons and we’re destined for great things. 😀
I love this piece, Lark Ascending. Have a listen and see what you think.

A beautiful trip to ride upon is that misses. Thank you. If you bring Mr Whelk along he’ll need to wipe his feet before muckying up the Cloud.
I’m in on the spoons and fame bit.

He can record percussion separately, we’ll add it in afterwards ensuring we take all the glory (and money) for ourselves. 😀

Now that’s what I call a plan Stan!
ps – The concert was excellent, but it was the second half, the whole of Sheherazade that took my breath away. I’d go again tonight if they were playing!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s wonderful when something exceeds your expectations.
You’re so lucky, Esme. I live in the sticks and we don’t get much in the way of entertainment near home, we have to travel about an hour.

Thank you Adele, it was stupendous!
“You’re so lucky, Esme.” – Ah . . . we’re all lucky in a variety of different fashions, I’m pretty sure I’d envy some of your life too – smiles and nods – especially the bits with Mr Whelk and his dodgy chum in eh? Hahahahaha. No, they’re quite a riot at times, and esme does enjoy their posts. I still haven’t stopped laughing at the original Olly Murs and his giant head one.

I’m not sure what a chum in is but everything about Mr Whelk is dodgy 😀
No it’s great craic, Esme. There’s a great blogger that use to love the Olly Murs skits too but she disappeared a while back. She was really good and one of my favourites on here… Ezekiel Fish.

It’s a pal (not dog food, though both Chum and Pal are indeed brand named tins of said stuff), a mate. Possibly even friend, (if they pass all the tests of fire and don’t make a show of you). I can tell he’s dodgy. Having a giant shell for a head was the first giveaway, but don’t tell him, I wouldn’t want to offend and he wears the top hat with aplomb (rather than a plumb — an oft made gaff by oiks in posh society).
Ezekiel Fish! Now there’s a name! Hahahahaha. It’s a shame when they disappear, those who float on top (sounds like poo, isn’t meant to).

Doh! Sorry! Chum, of course. For some strange reason I was thinking of chumming, like you do with sharks. slaps head I thought you’d missed an M and G. 😀 I’m such a dope.
I’m often the last one to realise I’m being made a ‘show of’ not surprising when you think I didn’t click about the ‘chum in’ term of phrase. 😀
Thanks for the tea and biscuits. Adele renamed Dopey Dell.

Not at all, you are nothing like as dopey as some of my followers. Hahahaha – *esme pegging it fast from a hail of rotten fruit thrown by the disgruntled audience upon the Cloud *

A vile pedant- oh, dear me no, not me- might think you had not read the thousand and one nights, which does not have “a thousand and one tales”. Many tales took longer than one night, and the whole point was leaving a cliffhanger, so that the Sultan would not murder her, but see how the tale continued.

Oh I know the story, and it is unpleasant indeed, but the music inspired by it all is without doubt beautiful. Sunshine through the storm. nods

A regular listen during my teen years; the protagonist’s leitmotif is quite exquisite.

Indeed Hariod. I can’t get enough of that particular slice of notes, and the lead violinist’s capability for glissando when playing solo was something to behold. It’s a very tricky piece in parts. I love how it seems to make use of every single instrument one way or another; there’s a tambourine and a triangle in there! Hahahahahaha.

I enjoyed this, Esme, thank you. I was in concert band for 7 years when I was in school, so it brought back some good memories. I especially loved how specific segments of this suite took my mind to a place where I sensed tender love, compassion, tranquility, awe and hope, e.g., around the 10 and 43 minute markers. Also, I could detect that John Berry was influenced by various parts of this composition, based on some of the more inspiring musical moments in his movie scores.

You’re very welcome Victoria. Do you mean John Barry? I love so many film scores, tis a passion of mine. I’m so pleased you liked this so much!

I heart the heck out of Шехераза́да and tales and tales of tales and splendid music. My mother introduced my ears to classical music before I could talk; I’ve been grateful for that ever since. A full (not fulsome) disclaimer — I was born on her 26th birthday in the year of my eponym, to wit 1947. So I shall now remember all that with this mnemonic:
She her a zade.
Hello up there (on the Cloud), hello 🙂

Hello down there Bill! Esme is a fan of ‘fulsom’ things, and your mnemonic is most certainly one of them, well done that man – laughs.

Good. I know you’ll listen to the lot, and it’s well worth it too. I have it on a play list set aside for just the right kind of moments. I’ve loved it since I was a child and can faithfully reproduce the whole piece with a comb and paper. I hope you like it sir.

That was indeed a wonderful piece Esme! Thank you Darling for sharing. And I would utterly enjoy your comb-paper masterpiece some day very soon Ma’am. (grin & wink)

The sauce was simmering, I was peeling potatoes… Esme’s music was lovely… and then gone. Sadly this stopped playing for me midway through. I shall return. Happy Sunday on the cloud.

Hello! I’m not disappointed with your recent post. Not at all. However, I want to be straight with you. You see, I’m not really a “music guy”. In fact, years ago I gained a bit of notoriety (upon the information superhighway) for a statement I made about a certain genre of music you and your readers may be familiar with. The statement was as follows:
“OF ALL OF THE CURSES TO HAVE BEFALLEN MANKIND, THAT ROCK AND ROLL WILL NEVER DIE IS MOST ASSUREDLY THE WORST”
The President and Founder
I know, I know, the tune you present here is not ‘Rock and Roll’, but, and, I’m sure after a moments thought you will agree, it could easily be shown to be directly responsible for the advent of that detestable racket and as such must be condemned!
Your Old Pal,
The…

How could I possibly disagree?! Well from several angles actually, but none do I take and make into a disturbing shape, so all is well there you’ll be thrilled (to bits) to hear I’m sure.
And then I found the two places these great (ish) words were previously published (for the masses (no religious business))
Here – at your old gaff P&F – A simple, repetitive phrase structure
And more impressively here, in the dark backwaters of the Cloud no less! – Daydream in Blue
Here’s the spooky part – (hands him a hot water bottle with a furry cover that has the face of an otter to offer some comfort in these times of worry) – I’ve been singing that very song for a full week! The Gods and medium sized Frogs are having their fun with esme again it seems. One day she shall be avenged! But I drift . . . thank you P&F, for gracing the Cloud with your ominous self.
