The first two links should be viewed before going any further down the page, so you know what the hell Esme is going on about.
Explore the shore in the first link. The second link allows you to click forwards and walk around the edge of the island, it is fabulous.
The Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Ireland
The Giant’s Causeway, Staffa, Scotland
Those two places are of the same formation and joined as one, albeit under the ocean.
Blissful Basalt Encounters of the Natural Oblivion Kind
Turn —
— Look back across sixty millennia, a planet raw …
For we who endure are still one on this shore
Desperate lava distends, bends, strains skywards,
grasping at distant elusive clouds …
bested, resigned, it collapses back into boiling,
filthy, molten red rivers of volatile rock;
the ribbon dance of a bellicose Mamma Magma,
hypnotic in her basaltic chambers as she vents
glorious menacing arcs — gymnastic pyroclastics.
Faults? Poker-faced is she — any to be found are
fractured war zones, multiple hidden depths.
Cretaceous granite exhumation exhales, and
Earth breathes life into dead fissures.
For we who endure are still one on this shore
The future calls —
Aeons roll, ballistic tholeiitic basalt beaten
via endless abrasive adventures which slide by
with crooked smiles cooling their heels;
bitter degrees herald the icy imperious,
yet slothful march of careless sulking glaciers.
In essence, time should now parade
Battered, bruised strata, serve up
unidentifiable ablated wrecks,
One and all lost; obliterated remnants,
scattered debris cast to the four winds,
the five oceans; weathered to oblivion.
For we who endure are still one on this shore
But when those roiling sinful seas abate —
A landscape of pure, precise, perfect
geometry presents its glorious self.
Hex upon hexagon, spellbound steps
piled high by the primeval; obstinate,
unwavering time reveals a giant’s
entrenched, entreating ancient footfalls.
Petrified yes, howbeit faultlessly fearless.
The Way, The Cause — a hungering, innate,
elemental hope, desire and belief.
In response, the roaring applause of the sea —
every breaking wave a stepped, swept, standing ovation.
For we who endure are still one on this shore
A gull calls;
Algae walls;
A shard falls …
Found —
Ground smooth with skilled, patient labour,
bore adamantine drilled, to be chained;
not shackled, but most deftly bound
around pale throat, fluttering trace of jugular;
it is well and truly double hung,
flat upon breastbone, this heart’s hearth stone
sits warm, buttery, pliable, yet still basalt.
It has stamped welcome possession upon the
soft skin of an island, the erratic beating heart within.
Witness —
A slow beat of tectonic appreciation;
A natural oblivion find;
A beloved crime.
This is all mine …
… all mined.
For we who endure are still one on this shore

nice…

An awesome evocation of the power of nature’s blind forces, shaping a vast mass with an illusion of conscious design — and then conscious shaping, for real, of a tiny fragment. Your words are art indeed.

That’s quite the compliment Infidel, I’m extremely pleased it works well, doesn’t get bogged down in geological terms. Thank you very much for really taking it in. Art no less, couldn’t ask for more.

Visiting the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland was an incredible experience!

I’ll bet, it’s considered the 8th wonder of the world in Ireland, and I heartily agree!

Easy to see why it is given that description. There was a major rainstorm while I was there – made it even more exciting!

Ha! Gneiss, very gneiss indeed, and I do not take your praise for granite, that’s schist unfair. beams
Thanks Poetpas, good to see you’re still around. 🙂

Beautiful poem! And the links deserve the same description, of course ( I hope I get to see The Giant’s Causeway some day…..I’ve always found those hexagonal stones fascinating and enchanting. Methinks I’d be there from dawn ’til dusk taking hundreds of photos…le sigh!)
Lovely necklace, too! I bet Faeries can be seen through the hole in that stone 😉
P.s., Sorry to make this comment longer, but I can’t find the email you sent 😦 Which email addy did you send it to? It wasn’t in my main one, which probably means it was in the one that gmail won’t let me log into/ tells me doesn’t exist anymore ( because I hadn’t looked at it in a while, probably. They apparently close them down/ delete them if you’ve not checked them in 2 years. Thing is, I swear I DID check it about 11 months ago, so that’s weird…tech seems to be conspiring against me of late! And having said that, I hope you get to see this comment!)
Anyway, just wanted you to know- just in case you thought I was being terribly rude. It’s not my style to ignore emails from excellent people!

Thank you! You can leave as long a comment as you like as you are in my top five ‘Best Ever Bloggers’ list (watches a world war start at Mr Pink’s place).
How about you email me on esmeraldauponthecloud2@gmail.com ? 😀 The web is a bugger.
“I bet Faeries can be seen through the hole in that stone” I can definitely see a bottle of Grey Goose vodka. Hahahahaha.

Ah, cheers for that, Esme! I’ll drop you a line very soon ☺️. I’m pleased at least to see that my comment here went through, and I can see your response also. Miracle of miracles!
Hahaha. Faeries, vodka…close enough! Heed the call of the Grey Goose, for she speaks of wondrous things!

Thanks, lovely! This is getting frustrating, innit. They haven’t come up in the comment/ alerts sidebar thingy, but I’ll check all the other places they may be hiding. I’ll be super Ninja about it so they don’t hear or see me sneaking up with my butterfly net!
