"Genres aren't closed boxes. Stuff flows back and forth across the borders all the time." - Margaret Atwood, All our slim shady glades, Clay, Creations, no other box I choose to use, Pottery
My most recent creation, two months from conception to finished firing. Copper oxide on Earthenware clay. I’m particularly pleased the ferns connect from body to lid, it’s wondrously tactile.
(looks pleased with herself)
Gorgeous! Love the nautilus on the lid 🙂

Thank you my dear, I’m so pleased you like it! I’m a big fan of nautilus, and consequently of course ammonites. x

No. It’s a nautilus surrounded by a type of seaweed called Bryopsis. It’s a scene from the bottom of the ocean, because I say so.

That’s absolutely true, and not a bag of bollocks at all.

I can’t comment on your blog for some reason, and you’re off X (as am I) so I’ll let you know here to watch the skies, for a parcel is coming your way 😘

Me too! The whole is ‘whole’, if that makes sense. And I have no idea /how/ you managed to connect up all the curves despite two firings? Simply beautiful. 🙂

Thank you Meeka! Yes, that was the challenge, to make it as close to a solid looking object as possible. The two firings were first from greenware (clay) to bisque (pottery), the second after painting the glazes on. It is an arduous business but also one filled with magic as you truly can never be sure exactly what you’ll get in the end. It’s alchemy!

Yes, there is a huge element of alchemy involved! I did a little bit of pottery back in my uni. days and I have a teapot to prove it! But someone else had to make the ‘lid’ for me so I know just how difficult it is. Please post more about your creations. I love seeing pics/videos of such lovely things. Brightens my day.

The ferns are gorgeous. Also love the irregular closure.

Thank you Tish, most appreciated, I just couldn’t bear a straight line, there’s something of a puzzle box about an irregular lid. I’d like to hinge ceramic lids too at some point.

Beautiful work! Did you use an actual ammonite shell for the lid?
Now all you need to worry about is cenobites appearing if you open it all the way…..

No, tis a mould of one, and I also saw Hellraiser in the video, hahahaha.

Love, love, LOVE it Esme! Like Pink, I too love the Nautilus-like aesthetic similar to the octopuses of Jules Verne you see at Steampunk Cons. 😁😍 Beautiful my Lady, just magnificent!

Esme does several cartwheels whooping* – Thank you kindly Prof! Yes, it fits that ilk for sure. I made an octopus necklace when that was where my artistic leanings bent, the connections to Cthulhu then bloom too. I like the odd tentacle.

Esme, do you have another website now for selling your fine crafts? If so, please share! I’d be very, VERY interested. 😍
