Fantastical and Unusual Celluloid.
Esme particularly enjoyed this film as it isn’t a run of the mill alien/monster malarkey; ’tis far more subtle, set some six years after an alien invasion, centring on the impact on real life, which carries on regardless. You don’t normally see that in this genre. It builds up well, and If you enjoy J.J Abrams work, you will enjoy this. There’s also a few enormous monsters in there for those who just like big ole humongous monsters too.
Another oddity slotted and potted upon the Cloud for your perusal and consideration. Have a gander at the trailer, unlike most of them it doesn’t actually show the whole film.

No. It’s simply not true. Water monsters are certainly not afraid of water, spray them all you like and see what happens. Need I say? But then you’re not apt to find them under the bed either.

You’re quite right Peter, but as it turns out I’ve never had to scare a water one away, in fact, I’d go as far as to say they are really quite accommodating at times.

Oh yes, a cushion is much like a towel, (as I’m sure Douglas Adams would agree), ideal to hide behind as things get tenser and tenser! I’m no fan of ‘Boo!’ films mind you, I like well written ones that chill you to the bone. Anyone can jump out with a mask on and shout ‘Boo!’, then chuck a pan of tomato sauce all over the show.

Lisa and I are going to watch it tonight; actually, it had already made its way to our shortlist of monster films: movies with or without a monster that promise to disturb the demeanor and disquiet the dreams of the wary and the unwary as well — where I ever play the part of the unwary and Lisa always plays the part of the ultra wary audience member who has unraveled the plot before the opening credits have ended.

Excellent. I have to admit I am very much like Lisa and nine out of ten times I will predict the plot before it happens. Sometimes in one go very early on, sometimes in bits and snips and bobs, but always . . . before it happens. Afterwards isn’t so impressive you see. falls about. I am right a huge amount of the time, (goes without saying buffs her nails on her sleeve)therefore I love it when I’m blindsided, or can’t quite work which way the story will go. With this one I really enjoyed the quietness of it as the story builds. I hope you both enjoy it Bill. Let me know.

I surreptitiously check out movie reviews on Googler to find the plotline — then I “predict” the plot at the appropriate moment (occasionally the most inappropriate moment, ’cause I’d looked up the wrong film and turned the moment into a Trump Administration.

Speaking of the current Misadministration, the actual Monster is Number 45. I’m saying that the “Monster” is a creature who watched this film “six years ago” and glommed it into his id. It felt like the 4th, 5th and 6th walls broke simultaneously. Did I just use the word “wall”?
A breathtakingly scary movie, Esme. Bigly.

Pretty enjoyable flick. This film got Gareth Edwards hired to do the Godzilla movie he made. Many didn’t like that one, but I enjoyed it.

Yes it wasn’t bad, I don’t like Godzilla as a creature much, but thought he brought something new to the long list of previous efforts on that theme. I could watch Monsters again quite easily if it came on TV, and that’s usually a good sign.

I also liked what he did with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, though, from what I’ve read, much of that movie was re-shot with another director.

I’ll check it out! He also directed Rogue One, which was a really well done movie, unlike many of the actual newer main Star Wars movies, which while still enjoyable have too many plot holes in my opinion.

Yes, Ben told me that above, I knew but had forgotten – points at cloudy brain. It was very good, the latter films haven’t hit the spot for me so he did well, the earlier films I still love.

LOL…I was more upset by Admiral Akbar easily getting killed, while a brand new character played by Laura Dern sort of waits while numerous escape pods or destroys before stoically crashing herself into a star destroyer. I mean you were going to die anyway, what the hell were you waiting for? lol

No, the actual reason is that by crashing into it she destroyed the star destroyer. That was why she stayed behind!It needed womaning in order to get close enough. Her fictional life was wasted on you Swarn!

LOL…all I’m saying is that Admiral Akbar is a known character to Star Wars fans and so he could have been the one to do the heroic move here. Star Wars movies have been sort of criticized for being too human focused, and so I think it’s a valid complaint that when you had a known alien character who could have a heroic end, why choose a random human. I love Laura Dern and I think she’s a fine actress, so if it had to be anybody I guess I’m glad it’s hers…but yeah…pod after pod is just blowing up…it’s like she was counting…waiting until at least half were destroyed before she says…okay let’s turn around and ram them. lol

I think WHAT she did was cool, but I’d rather have had Akbar go out in style and have had Holdo stick around for the next movie. She was a new character I wish I could have seen more of in more movies.

Oh, I agree. Plus the ENTIRE subplot with Finn that had NOTHING to do with the main plot in ANY way. The whole thing could have been lifted out and NOTHING in the film would have been affected. Then there’s the light sabre toss over the shoulder rather than Luke simply handing it BACK to Rey and saying, “This is yours now. The Force has chosen YOU to take over.” Luke needed to fight, too–not die from an astral projection exercise. UGH!! Love Star Wars, even this one, but man, make a good one for us old time fans for Yoda’s sake! The bloody EU books had better stories than what the Prequels have been so far, and I’ve little confidence Ep 9 can “fix” any of it. UGH!!!

Couldn’t agree more. None of the ends of the main characters from the original movies have been touching in anyway…they just kind of happen, and you’re like…oh…well goodbye then. It’s frustrating to say the least.

Yoda was sad, but he died in the originals. And I don’t know…Han Solo’s death was so sudden and really seemed purposeless and out of character. This is a man who you would expect to die fighting in some way…after never telling him the odds. And Carrie Fisher is dead…I don’t even understand why they Killed Luke instead. I mean Leia could have died numerous times in that movie, but no they brought her back, and then killed Luke…through exhaustion of astral projection. It’s just weird stuff. lol

And they’ve utterly failed to effectively hand the “light sabre” over to the new characters. I don’t care what happens to them. I really like Daisy Ridley, but her character needed to be built up as THE NEXT SAVIOR OF THE GALAXY. Having Luke hand the sabre back to her and saying, “It’s up to you now. YOU are the new ‘Chosen One’,” would have greatly helped do this, even more so than making her a Skywalker. But, since they didn’t do that, SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SKYWALKER! UGH! Hopefully the new Han Solo movie will be good. If it at least takes place in the Star Wars universe we know and love and stays true to it, I’ll be happy. Ain’t holding my breath, but we’ll see. UGH!

Lol…I feel ya. And I personally am not looking forward to the Han Solo movie…I mean we know what young Han Solo looks like. He looks nothing like this Han Solo… Is rather they CGI’d some Harrison Ford. Lol

Not at all! I really like it when people start jibbering away on one of my posts, the Cloud is here for just that, and passions tun high with science fiction, I know that all too well. nods
I have seen every Star Wars film at the cinema, and all these tears since the very first film, I find my heart in my mouth and eyes shining bright with excitement. It doesn’t matter what comes afterwards in some respects, because I’ll always have that wonderful feeling at the start. I really enjoyed the nostalgia boost seeing Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia back on the bog screen together, despite finding the film a re-run of the original really.
Also, I’m a huge fan of Darth Maul.

Oh, I LOVE Star Wars! I own all the movies on Blu Ray as well as the whole Clone Wars animated series, both of them, and Star Wars: Rebels. I’ve seen each one, literally, hundreds of times, Rogue One, too. Even ones I complain about, like TLJ, I watch over and over because it’s still Star Wars and has some cool Star Wars stuff in it. The greatest movie-going experience I’ve ever had was watching, as a 13 year old in 1977, that Star Destroyer creep across the screen in the opening shot of the original Star Wars. Literally, it changed my life. i read the comics and the books, too. Love me some Star Wars. Help us, J.J. Abrams, and make a terrific Episode 9. PLEASE!!!!

Hahahaha, I love your passion for it! I remember that cinema visit so well too, an integral part of growing up was Star Wars. I like J.J Abrams, he can make cracking movies and some series too when he gets it right. I’ll cross everything for you my little God-man.
